How to Reduce Heartburn During Pregnancy

During the pregnancy period, most women are plagued by heartburn. The hormone that relaxes the muscles during pregnancy, progesterone, relaxes the stomach valve as well. Due to the fact that the stomach valve is relaxed, it stops keeping the acid out of the esophagus. Also, the growing uterus forces the acid into the esophagus. To reduce the heartburns and to have a more pleasant experience while you’re pregnant, read the following lines to learn what you must do.

Eat small meals

Heartburn appears when your stomach is overly stuffed. Therefore, do your best to avoid eating a lot at one sitting. Instead of eating three big meals a day, you should eat smaller meals 5-6 times a day. You won’t feel hungry after eating small meals and you’ll stay away from heartburn. For women who suffer from morning sickness, it will be easier to accustom themselves to this eating schedule than for those who have a healthy and normal appetite. But no matter how hard you find it to eat small meals in the first days, you will get accustomed to it after a short while. Therefore, hang in there and eat small portions and you’ll never feel the uncomfortable heartburns ever again.

Avoid drinking beverages while you eat

Heartburns will appear if you drink beverages while you eat. Therefore, instead of drinking a whole glass of water or milk when you eat, sip from it. You won’t feel thirsty anymore and you won’t be in pains after you finish eating either. Another thing that you could try is to drink a glass of water or milk before you eat. This way you reduce the chances of you getting thirsty while you eat.

Don’t eat before you go to sleep

A sure way to get heartburn during pregnancy is to eat before you go to bed. Doctors advise women who are pregnant to have their last meal at least 3 hours before they go to sleep. If you eat your last meal 3 hours prior to going to bed the food will have already been digested by your stomach. This way the excruciating stomach pains won’t appear anymore and you can finally sleep like a baby.

Wear loose clothes

Tight clothes feel very uncomfortable on pregnant women. They put pressure on the abdomen and they worsen the acid reflux. Instead of putting yourself through torture just for the sake of wearing tight clothes, buy and wear only loose fitting clothes. You won’t put any pressure on your crammed abdomen if you do this and you won’t feel heartburns either.
